Socio-Political Inclusion a Better Bet for State-Formation and Nation-building
Every time I speak to
sons and daughters of Ethiopia, I get an almost similar narrative; a narrative
of a people that are increasingly losing hope in their own country! Eritreans
already did. Ethiopia is an emerging economic giant in Africa but then again
the political process is throwing many of her sons and daughters off as the
monstrous government roars through the rails of the Chinese model. I always
warn people who love lecturing me about economic growth that economies can grow and ca falter; they even burn down. I am a strong
advocate of this small thing we call socio-political inclusion. If and when a
country grabs this, all those nice loose things that people love to talk about
such as peace, security, stability, development, progress, stability etc will
emerge. Perhaps the whole nation of Libya would have arisen to defense the
Colonel when external forces illegally and illegitimately came for him if and
if only they felt part of their government. The greatest undoing for the great
Gaddafi is - in my view - his refusal to include the people in his brilliant
ideas. He provided the best that any leader would, he loved his people and his
nation; he dreamed and wanted the very best for them but he never included them
in the governance of their nation. When those bloodthirsty creatures of the
world came, the people of Libya had no connection with their leader; they did
not find reason to arise an-masse and defend their leader. He died a shameful
and illegitimate death and today the great Libya is just but a ghost of its
former past. I have been very wary about Ethiopia, Rwanda etc. I will still
sing; socio-political inclusion is the small magic - a better bet. Countries that have dared
experiment on this, such as those in eastern Europe have proved to have longer
and predictable stability and have attained most of the goods that nations
exist for.
